Als dansleerling je leerproces optimaliseren

Inleiding
In eerste instantie zou je denken dat, als jij als dans leerling ‘je best doet’ in een les, je jouw leerproces maximaal benut. Meer dan dat kun je toch niet doen? Niets is minder waar! Er zijn zeker nog wat andere skills die je kunt toepassen om als dansleerling jouw leerproces te optimaliseren!
Werk met jouw docent
Een docent werkt met jou als leerling op een bepaalde manier waarbij de docent specifiek materiaal aanbiedt en op een specifieke manier dat bij de doelgroep past, dat weten we allemaal. Maar ook als leerling kun jij op een ‘bepaalde manier’ met jouw docent werken! Een vaak onderschatte rijkdom in jouw leerproces als (beginnende) danser.
Slim leren
Vaak ben jij als leerling zo met je dans en het ‘zo goed mogelijk uitvoeren van de dansbeweging’ bezig, dat je vergeet om ‘slim’ te leren en met jouw docent te werken, in plaats van dat jouw docent alleen met jou werkt ;-).
Onder slim leren kun je veel dingen verstaan, waarbij onderstaande voorbeelden een kleine greep zijn uit de mogelijkheden. Laat je vooral inspireren om zelf verder te denken en dingen uit te proberen!
1) Oogcontact
Als je als dansleerling oogcontact maakt met jouw docent, dan ben je ‘bereikbaar’ voor feedback als tips of complimenten. Als je meer wilt leren dan is dit dus je eerste move! Kijk naar je docent en zorg dat je ogen alert zijn in het contact gedurende de dansles.
Bijvoorbeeld als je klaar bent met een oversteek oefening of een diagonale verplaatsing:
Vaak zie je in de lespraktijk dat de dansleerling na de oefening:
• met zijn ‘oversteek-partner’ een paar woorden wisselt over hoe het ging (of over geheel iets anders kletst ;-))
• dat de dans leerling in zijn eigen wereld zit (overdenkt wat er goed of fout ging)
• naar de andere overstekende andere leerlingen kijkt (op zich een hele goede actie)
Maar… in al deze bovengenoemde facetten is de dans leerling NIET beschikbaar voor de docent!
Vanuit de docent bekeken: de docent heeft jouw gezien tijdens de oversteek en als je klaar bent wil de docent graag met jou aan de slag door:
• je een compliment te geven
• je een tip te geven
• je een kleine aanwijzingen te geven
• je te wijzen op een specifieke pas die toch net iets anders is dan je dacht
Kortom: de docent is klaar en bereid om jou verder te helpen in je leerproces. En waar ben jij met jouw aandacht? Als de docent je niet kan bereiken, dan mis je een grote kans!
Dus nadat je een dansactie hebt gedaan: zoek oogcontact met de docent! Grote kans dat je daardoor
• meer complimenten binnensleept
• meer helderheid krijgt over jouw dansactie
• meer feedback ontvangt waardoor je jouw leerproces optimaliseert!
2) Fysiek uitproberen
Een ander vlak waarop je als dans leerling winst kan behalen, is het fysiek uitproberen van o.a. correcties. Als een docent de moeite neemt om jouw een correctie te geven, dan betekent dit dat de docent in jou wil investeren als danser. Knik niet alleen maar met je hoofd van ‘ah ja, bedankt ik snap het’, want wij dansers weten als geen ander dat we een hoop kunnen ‘snappen’ maar dat het lichaam soms andere plannen heeft. Het lichaam heeft het veelal nodig om het werkelijk fysiek uit te proberen waardoor de spieren, de gewrichten, het bewustzijn en alles wat bij de beweging betrokken is een ervaring kan krijgen van wat de bedoeling is.
Als de docent de moeite neemt om jou een correctie te geven kun je dit oppakken door in jouw reactie fysiek uit te proberen hoe het voelt, of je in jouw lichaam snapt wat de docent bedoelde! Laat deze kans niet liggen. Dit geldt overigens ook voor klassikale correcties: ook al geldt de correctie niet direct voor jou, het is dé uitgelezen kans om uit te proberen en meer te leren!
3) Reageren
Onder reageren kun je verschillende dingen verstaan; in dit geval doel ik op jouw alertheid in de dansles. Soms wordt je als dansleerling in de groep meegezogen en ben je je minder bewust van je eigen aanwezigheid of alertheid in de les. Als een docent dan vraagt om ‘naar de rechterhoek te gaan’ dan slof jij rustig met je groepsgenoten mee. Hier kun je winst behalen, wees slim en reageer in een alerte actieve houding! Misschien slof je daardoor niet naar de hoek, maar doe je dit met een vaartje of dansend. Wat het ook is, reageer!
Ook als de docent een beetje wenkt van ‘kom eens naar voren’, als jij dan als dans leerling degene bent die lekker ver naar voren komt staan, dan is dat ook weer een punt van winst. Het vergroot de interactie met de docent, waardoor je een directere ‘lijn’ hebt waardoor je makkelijker kan leren doordat de docent makkelijker met jou kan werken.
Hoor de docent en zie de docent!
De docent geeft op diverse manieren instructies waarop je kan reageren als dansleerling:
• fysieke handgebaren om extra helderheid te verschaffen in richting, tempo, bewegingsaanzet etc.
• side-coaching teksten om je te ondersteunen in richting, tempo, bewegingsaanzet etc.
• benamingen voor bewegingen of specifieke woorden ter ondersteuning van de beweging: herhaal in jezelf de woorden die de docent noemt, zodat je werkelijk kunt profiteren uit de input die de docent je geeft – je onthoudt hierdoor de beweging ook nog eens makkelijker!
4) Doornemen van dansmateriaal
Neem dansmateriaal door voordat het wordt aangeboden (als het materiaal is wat je al eerder hebt gedanst) of als het wordt aangeboden, activeer jezelf - en je groepsgenoten - in het oefenen van het dansmateriaal. Sommige dansers leren door te kijken en stil te staan (ieder heeft zijn eigen manier van leren), maar veelal wordt de meeste winst behaald in het fysiek uitproberen waardoor het lichaam weet ‘oh ja, dit was het’. Je zult merken dat je soms het dansmateriaal niet meer in je hoofd weet, maar dat je lichaam het nog wel weet! Dat is het bewijs, dat het lichaam zeer behulpzaam is bij het onthouden van dansmateriaal. Neem het fysiek door!
5) Fysieke training vergroten
Je kunt jouw fysieke training in een les bijvoorbeeld vergroten door:
• als je het dansmateriaal doorneemt het materiaal voluit te dansen (zorg dat je de ruimte hebt)
• als de docent dansmateriaal uitlegt fysiek het materiaal te ‘volgen’ door het te doen met je lichaam, niet alleen te kijken
• als een docent een overgang uitlegt, jezelf in de positie waar de overgang over gaat te positioneren en daarmee fysiek oefenen
Note: zodra jij in ‘normale stand’ gaat staan met je lichaam (als in of je op de bus staat te wachten), kan het lichaam uitrusten, soms heel nodig in een dansles. Het kan ook een gemiste kans zijn om te trainen. Kijk wat gewenst is in welke situatie en wat je ook kiest: kies bewust!
6) Wees een individu èn leer van je groepsgenoten
Zorg dat je je niet al teveel laat meeslepen door de groep, hoewel in sommige gevallen dit ook weer positief uitpakt. Laat je enerzijds inspireren door je groepsgenoten, waarbij jouw leerproces wordt bevorderd. Aan de andere kant: wees een individu. Zorg dat je voor jezelf gaat en jezelf altijd op nummer 1 plaatst. Het is jouw les, het gaat om jou – en dat mag! Laat je dus alleen door je mededansers inspireren. Hou in de gaten of de dansers om je heen jouw leerproces bevorderen of vertragen!
Als jouw groepsgenoten jouw leerproces bevorderen wordt dit zichtbaar in:
• laat je inspireren door de energie van je groepsgenoten
• laat je inspireren door de kwaliteit van die ene danser (of meerdere dansers) waar je veel van kan leren
• laat je inspireren door het sociale contact wat je stimuleert om naar de dansles te komen, een fijne tijd te hebben, te genieten van dans in samenwerking met jouw groepsgenoten
• neem waar, zie je groepsgenoten in hun goede en minder goede aspecten, waar jij je voordeel uit kan halen!
Dus open je ogen en zie de mededansers!
Als jouw groepsgenoten jouw leerproces vertragen wordt dit zichtbaar in:
• dat je merkt dat je telkens wordt afgeleid van de inhoud van de les
• dat je niet goed de docent kan volgen
• dat je jezelf teveel gaat vergelijken met je groepsgenoten, waardoor je jezelf naar beneden haalt – blijf bij jezelf!
Het gaat om jou, precies in waar je nu bent!
7) Stel vragen en anderzijds… probeer het uit zonder dat je het zeker weet!
Door vragen te stellen bewerkstellig je een zeer interactieve relatie met jouw docent. Let wel op dat je hierbij ook teveel vragen kunt stellen, die erop wijzen dat je zonder het zeker te weten niet iets wilt of kunt uitproberen. Vragen stellen werkt over het algemeen verdiepend, bekrachtigend en versterkend, om maar niet te spreken over verhelderend! Je kunt over talloze onderwerpen vragen stellen, bijvoorbeeld:
• dansmateriaal qua vorm
• dansmateriaal qua beweegrichting
• overgangen van de ene beweging naar de andere
• bewegingsintentie & emotionele lading bij de beweging
• technische vragen (over hoe je iets uitvoert)
• etc.
De docent vindt het over het algemeen een heel fijn gegeven dat jij vragen stelt als dansleerling! We voelen daardoor bij jou betrokkenheid bij hetgeen je aan het doen bent.
Je kunt echt er ook teveel vragen stellen. Leerlingen die geen risico durven te nemen of heel veel houvast nodig hebben (of de controle niet los kunnen laten) zijn geneigd om zoveel te vragen dat het ze duizelt. Vaak zie je dan ook dat voordat deze leerlingen het antwoord binnen hebben ze eigenlijk de beweging niet zouden willen uitvoeren op muziek omdat het te ‘onzeker’ voelt.
Een goede docent vist deze leerlingen er zo uit en zal hen motiveren om het eerst eens te proberen óf het antwoord zelf te vinden in het doen van de beweging. Risico nemen is ook een vak in de dansles!
8 ) Communiceer, durf echt SAMEN te werken
Als dansleerling mag je gerust zeggen wat je ervaart! Daar ligt een beetje een taboe op in dansland, maar laten we deze toch met z'n allen alsjeblieft doorbreken. Dansleerling wat vind jij? Wat voel jij? Wat ervaar jij? Laat van je horen! Vind je de les te snel gaan, of juist te langzaam, of heb je andere ervaringen die er toe doen in jouw leerproces (alsof er een ervaring is die er niet toe doet!)? Heb je nog extra vragen over dat ene wat jou werd gezegd, of die correctie die je toch niet helemaal snapte achteraf...
Durf de docent op te zoeken en samen het onderwerp op te pakken.
Kortom: werk met jouw docent, wees slim!

Leuke blog en zeer herkenbaar!
Wat ik nog mis in de communicatie tussen danser/leerling en docent is het beantwoorden van bijv een algemene vragen zoals: Snappen we het? Zijn er nog vragen? Dan is het vaak gewoon stil en kijk je naar bijna een "apathische" groep. Terwijl het dan juist het uitgelezen moment is om nog net die vraag te stellen.
